  • Frédéric Houssiau, MD, PhD is Head of the Rheumatology Department at the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc in Brussels and Full Professor at the Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium. He was elected as vice-rector for the Health Sciences Sector of the university in September 2017.

    Frédéric Houssiau earned his MD and PhD from the Université Catholique de Louvain. He was trained in internal medicine and rheumatology in the academic hospital and at St Thomas’s Hospital in London and in basic immunology at the Christian de Duve Institute in Brussels.

    Frédéric Houssiau’s scientific achievements encompass basic and clinical contributions in the field of rheumatology, with a focus on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Within the frame of the European Working Party on SLE, he coordinated the EURO-LUPUS and the MAINTAIN nephritis trials, two European-based investigator-driven studies aiming at defining the optimal immunosuppressive regimens for lupus nephritis. Frédéric Houssiau is actively involved in several clinical trials testing biologics in SLE. He is a founding member of the Lupus Nephritis Trials Network and is currently coordinating the REBIOLUP trial. He has (co-)authored more than 120 scientific articles on SLE.
